Rangers’ run is ended as Ardrossan come from behind to win

The Ayrshire side came from behind to win 2-1 and end the Duncansfield side’s 100 per cent record. The home fans were unhappy when Ardrossan striker Ian Reid left his mark on both Kilsyth centre backs with flailing arms inside the first 15 minutes, drawing blood from the face of Chris Reid in one of the incidents. But the referee wasn’t interested and the striker went on to play a crucial part in his side’s victory. Both sides had some early chances with Nicky Prentice and Paul McBride having the best efforts for Kilsyth while Gareth Turner had a 20-yard strike for Ardrossan but it went well over the bar. Kilsyth opened the scoring on 22 minutes when Joe Barclay chased down the Ardrossan ‘keeper who had to send the ball out of play. From the resulting throw in the ball broke to Paul McBride who slotted home from around 12 yards. On the half hour Ardrossan’s Reid was again involved in some rough stuff and finally found his name going in the ref’s notebook for a challenge on Michal Hrenak. Paul McBride was looking dangerous up top for Kilsyth and was unlucky not to double his tally just before half-time when his shot was cleared, via the post, by an Ardrossan defender, although the linesman had his flag raised against the incoming Barclay. Ardrossan made a change at half time with John Bradford replacing Dean Richardson who was feeling ill. This meant a change of shape with Winton going to three at the back. Ardrossan started strongly in the second half and were almost level after Hrenak was sloppy on the ball and Bobby Colligan nipped in but the winger couldn’t score. However the visitors were level on 50 minutes when Ryan Caddis crossed to Reid who headed home at the back post. Kilsyth were angry that a player they felt should have been sent off had scored, although the goal did resullt from poor defending from the home side. Prentice came close to putting Kilsyth back in front but his angled drive fizzed just past the post. Ardrossan were playing a lot of long balls up to Reid and Bradford who were winning a lot of free-kicks from the referee. Ryan Caddis was the best player for Ardrossan and really should have scored when he was clean through on Andy Carlin’s goal but somehow he blasted well over. It was a very scrappy game now and from a disputed free-kick the visitors took the lead, Reid once again getting got on the end of the delivery to head past Carlin. Kilsyth then seemed to waken up and have several half chances but couldn’t take any of them. The winning start to the season has been ended but Kilsyth remain in second place in the league. This Saturday Kilsyth travel to Kello Rovers in the first round of the New Coin Holdings West of Scotland Cup. Kick off is 2pm and the team bus will be leaving from Lidl at 11.15am.
