TOP cyclist Arthur Doyle paid tribute to his hero after winning a prestigious race on Saturday.

Arthur (35) clinched victory in the Jason McIntyre Memorial 10 mile time trial in Fort William in a time of 20 minutes, 49 seconds.

The Scottish pursuit champion was competing against more than 80 cyclists in the tribute race, which was held to raise money for the family of legendary cyclist Jason MacIntyre.

Arthur, a kidney specialist, cycles from his Bearsden home to his work at Gartnavel Hospital as part of his training.

He said: "It is obviously good to win any event, but to win this race is special.

"It was an individual race held on the route that Jason use to race on. Jason was a phenomenal rider.

"Just to show how good he was, he did the race I've just won in well under 20 minutes - a clear minute ahead of me."

However, Arthur did admit that conditions had been far from ideal.
He added: "The race was over quite an undulating course, and I found it quite hard going as the wind was in my face in the first stage."

Racing into the wind meant, Arthur could only reach a maximum speed of 26 miles per hour. However, with the wind at his back on the return leg, he reached a top speed of 37 mph.

Arthur believes his latest victory will give him an important boost so early in the cycling calendar, with a series of road races coming up.
He said: "I'm cycling much better than I was last year which is really encouraging.
"I'm looking forward to the Scottish Ten Mile time trials, which are held on Sunday, May 18."
