The big storm approaches
As Scotland braces itself for the impact of storm Abigail tonight, the University of Dundee has issued a stunning satellite photograph of Abigail as it approaches Scotland.
Warnings of wild weather have been issued as the storm hits earlier than expected today, with winds of 90 mph predicted, along with warnings of lightning – and a month’s worth of rain in just 48 hours.
Transport is expected to be disrupted, and power suppliers have warned of electricity outages as the storm rages across the country. Flooding is likely as the high rainfall levels combine with tides likely to be even higher than they normally are at this time of year.
Abigail is the first storm to be named by the Met Office in a new initiative.
