A BEARSDEN resident is blaming the previous Liberal Democrat-controlled council for turning the area beside Allander Leisure Centre into an unsightly dump.
He has slammed their policy of fortnightly refuse collections and charges for special uplifts, saying the fly tipping and litter problem at the Bearsden centre are their legacy.
Dr Iain White, of Upper Glenburn Road, said: "The area surrounding the recycling centre at the Allander Sports Centre is demeaning and an affront to common standards of amenity.
"The material left around the recycling containers is not the result of the odd discarded item, but is a direct result of the previous Liberal Democrat administration's ill thought out changes to the refuse collection system.
"The people of Bearsden and Milngavie are eager to recycle whatever they can, if the proper facilities are provided. If the facilities are poor, rubbish collects and acts as a magnet to fly tippers.
"A natural area of shrubs and semi-wilderness has been converted into a coup."
He added that the car park is used by staff in Connect vehicles as a quiet location to have a break before the end of the working day, and said: "These "odd half hours", if used more constructively, could make a huge impact on the mountain of debris that currently despoils the site.
"The Allander Sports Centre has recently been called a 'Jewel In The Crown', yet the area around it is a shocking example to our young people in the lead up to the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.
"I hope that the new councillors for this area will not tolerate what is obviously an ongoing problem."
