A HOST of new or improved facilities could soon be provided throughout the district now that agreement has been reached on how new community funding will be distributed and spent in East Dunbartonshire.
When the council set its budget in February an allocation of £400,000 was agreed to be spread across the district so that each electoral ward could decide on a project identified by members of the local community.

Following that decision the council's finance department had to look at ways of funding the allocation after which officials and councillors discussed how the spend could go forward and progress was reported at last week's meeting of the full council.

Under the newly revamped council structure put in place last May, eight superwards were created, two of which are Bearsden North and South and a third in Milngavie, each of which has three councillors.

Once the councillors on each ward have agreed on where their £50,000 cash should be invested — and this can be either capital or revenue in nature — a detailed report will be given to the policy and resources committee which will take forward the appropriate works either by in-house teams, or where necessary, via contractors.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: "It is now the responsibility of councillors to work with their ward colleagues to decide where the money should best be invested in their own particular areas.

"Local councillors are often best placed to know what local people want done and this money gives us all an opportunity to use that knowledge and deliver the changes and improvements which will have the most impact."
